Batang West Side by Lav Diaz
Batang West Side by Lav Diaz

There are possibly two immediate statements that can be made about Filipino director Lav Diaz' film Batang West Side, which recently screened in competition at the 15th Singapore International Film Festival, and went on to win Best Film at the festival's Silver Screen Awards. Firstly, its five-hour duration demonstrates an intriguing exercise in a new aesthetics for cinema in our region, and not merely in the Philippines. Secondly, the film is a subtle intersection of personal memory and history. The narrative seems to suggest that for a nation to confront how it has been complicit in creating its history, its people need to confront their collective past. If this is in many ways at the core of Diaz' film, then it presents urgent questions to both Filipinos and those of us who live elsewhere in Southeast Asia. It certainly begins to ask us how we perceive our collective identity and what we know of our history.

Evolution of a Filipino Family
Evolution of a Filipino Family

Lav Diaz shot the film over the course of ten years, with minimal resources. I knew Lav as an extraordinary director, who is, to me, an inspiration and someone I should, in fact, take my hat off if I had one. Evolution took this admiration to a new level. You simply have to be a real artist, a genius, a committed filmmaker if you keep going for ten years. Money was scarce, actors died, he went through a divorce and a separation from his family all because of this film. But remarkably, he has created a perfectly coherent film. It may sound stupid, but in fact it must be more than difficult to not lose your thread in those ten years. Besides, in an interview he said that he lost the first cut of the film. Think about it…eleven hours. Gone. Having Evolution stand at the end of a long period of struggle is a strike of genius in itself.

Heremias
Heremias

Lav Diaz's nine-hour drama Heremias stars Ronnie Lazaro as the title character. He is a traveling craftsman who, early in the film, decides to separate from the group of fellow merchants with whom he has been traveling. During his time alone, a vicious hurricane leaves him without his ox or any of his goods. As he wanders, he learns a great deal about the various people he meets upon his travels. He eventually sees a group of drug-fueled teenagers plan to rape a young woman. Although he attempts to tell several people about the plan, nobody listens. He eventually reaches an agreement with God that if he goes 40 days without food, the girl will not be harmed. Heremias is the first half of a two-part story. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
