    The villagers in a beautiful remote area of Japan are divided into the woodsmen, who worship the mountain goddess, and the fishermen, who worship the goddess of the sea. These traditions are threatened by a planned marine park. Tatsuo is a macho lumberjack who hunts boars and monkeys with the young Ryota. Tatsuo is married with two children, has four elder sisters, and is under pressure to sell the family land to the developers. When the fish pens are deliberately contaminated by oil, the fishermen suspect Tatsuo. Kimiko, an old girlfriend of Tatsuo, returns to the village to find money to pay off her debts. During the annual fire festival, Tatsuo becomes angry when the old traditions are not preserved.

Akira (Teppei Koike) is late for his first day on the job as a firefighter. A fire occurs on that day and he goes with the other firefighters to the fire scene. Akira becomes frozen in front of the fire. Back at the fire station, Akira hopes to work at the fire station, but not go out to a fire site. Fire Captain Yohei (Toshio Kakei) decides to place Akira with a emergency medical services team. The emergency medical service team is always busy, but not always for emergency situations. One day, Akira and the medical services team go out to a car accident scene. A child there is having a cardiopulmonary arrest. The captain of the team, Kaede (Norika Fujiwara), instructs Akira to save the child. Akira applies first aid and the child's condition improves. For the first time in his life, Akira saves someone's life.
